Russia’s Golden Ring tours take travellers through a group of historic cities, most of them located north-east of Moscow. Together, they offer a closer look at Russian history, culture and architecture, making the route an excellent introduction to this vast and diverse country.
The idea of the Golden Ring route dates back to 1967. The classic route comprises eight cities: Yaroslavl, Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov Veliky, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Suzdal, and Vladimir. Uglich joined them in 2018, followed by Tver in July 2026.
Each Golden Ring city has its own character and place in Russian history. Yaroslavl is known as the capital of the route, with its historic centre, sweeping views of the Volga and the celebrated frescoes of the Church of Elijah the Prophet.
Russia’s Orthodox heritage comes into focus in Sergiev Posad, home to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. Vladimir, Suzdal, Pereslavl-Zalessky and Rostov Veliky preserve outstanding examples of medieval Russian architecture, including white-stone cathedrals, monasteries, centuries-old churches, wooden houses and imposing kremlin ensembles.
Kostroma reflects the history of merchant Russia and its jewellery-making traditions, while Ivanovo adds the legacy of the textile industry and Constructivist architecture. Uglich’s main landmarks include the Kremlin ensemble and the Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood, one of the city’s most recognisable monuments. Tver, set on the banks of the Volga, brings together landmarks from different periods, including the Imperial Travel Palace, historic churches, and traditional urban architecture.
Beyond the architecture of medieval Russia, the route also reveals elements of traditional Russian life. Onion-domed skylines, church bells, folklore and local legends connect the ancient monuments with the towns as they are today, making a journey around the Golden Ring an exploration of both Russia’s past and present.
